UNSCHEDULED MEETINGS describes the author’s personal experiences in encounters, all unexpected, with some of the most startling wild animals on several continents. Examples are a face-to-face meeting with a bull elephant on a riverside trail in Africa and the sudden discovery, one early morning, that she was closely following a mountain lion on a ridge top in the Sierra foothills. The author could easily have been killed in some meet-up instances but was never threatened. When a comfort zone between the animal and the person is respected by both, they can observe and learn about one another without fear on either side. Up to this point our understanding of wildlife has been very limited, and recent observations demonstrate that animals, from domestic to wild, have unusual powers and capabilities that have thus far defied scientific understanding. The underlying theme of the book is that humanity and the earth itself needs wild species—which usually manage their own numbers well if not interfered with by humans—for the well-being of all. Species are vanishing rapidly because of the war we are committing upon them and our environment. The book has an introduction, followed by twenty-five essays that can be read in any order, and a conclusion

Unscheduled Meetings LifeChanging Encounters with Wildlife from Around the Globe Rachel Oliver 9781939116253 Books

This wonderful book makes me think that I was the one experiencing these unusual events. I could feel along with the author as she watched a big African elephant strip the trees just off the Zambesi River trail, then feel my breath catch, too, as the elephant took notice of her and decided to walk towards her for a better look. What would you do in a case like that?
Throughout the book and its entrancing, beautifully written chapters, the author learned that wild animals tolerate our presence when we put out feelings of love and admiration, but they don't like it when we try to imitate their voices. When we sit quietly, caring and accepting of their presence, some of them approach very closely. Could you sit still when a large king snake slithers up onto the stoop where you are sitting with your morning tea, and just let it pass about two inches in front of your feet? The author did that and will always remember the thrill of it.
Rachel Oliver tells us that these wild animals have messages to share with us about how we should live, and that they protect the forests and landscape and keep everything in balance. This is a good book to share with youngsters after you've finished it.

Unscheduled Meetings LifeChanging Encounters with Wildlife from Around the Globe Rachel Oliver 9781939116253 Books Reviews

This collection contains well-observed details of a variety of animals, birds, reptiles and insects which the author has encountered during her interesting life. Some of those meetings were hair-raising - the front cover illustrates one which was WAY too close for comfort! On another occasion the author, instead of departing rapidly, walked up to photograph a dead bear cub, freshly killed by a cougar. But Rachel Oliver's empathy with all creatures (great and small) has protected her, and her book is a testament to the interconnectedness of all species, and to the web of life around us which many never notice.
By her own account, Rachel Oliver has been attuned to wild animals for many years, and she tells marvelous stories about encounters with them all over the world that have surprised and captivated her. But this is not just a travelogue with photos. Her book is a call to recognition that we are part of the world that these animals inhabit, that we are all interconnected. Although wild animals are different nations, we can communicate on many levels, in many different circumstances, to the benefit of all species. Rachel's prose is lovely and thoughtful, and her book resides on one of my outside tables this summer, where I can leaf through it in the midst of sights and sounds of the wildlife in my own neighborhood.
THIS BOOK IS GOOD. THE AUTHOR IS BRAVE. DOGS AND SNAKES ARE INVOLVED. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?
Unscheduled Meetings
This book is a lovely smooth read, for youth and adults alike, about places and animals with which few of us are acquainted. At times amusing, at times somber, Rachel's first person essays are informative, thought provoking and inspiring.
Heartwarming, it is,to know people like Rachel are intelligently seeking to preserve our only Earth's wildlife inhabitants.
Rachel Oliver's connection with the natural world is a testament to her profound curiosity and love of creatures, great and small. Her keen powers of observation and detailed recollection of her encounters with both wild and domestic creatures reads like an adventure story. The lively and poetic manner of introducing the ordinary and exotic world of creatures is engrossing and delightful. It is a book for readers of all ages.

Just stop for a moment, put down that cell phone, iPad, etc…and READ. This book is about a gifted author giving you a chance to experience a few encounters with some very big, very small animals. You will feel that you are there with her as she describes her amazement of nature and its glories. You will feel closer to the earth, wind, fire and sky when you have finished.
I have found the book to be a very enjoyable read. It brought you into a world of close contact with all sorts of animals from the coyotes to praying mantis. My favotite section was the desctiption of the Sea of Cortez and of course all of the creatures found there.
I would recommend it for those of you who would like to see more of the world around you.
